Kauri Creek

Kauri Creek Chart

It was great to have a chance to rest up once we had crossed the Bar. We are anchored at 1 on the above chart.  On Wednesday, Anzac Day, we did the washing and got Mini Maripi (our 2.5m inflatable tender) ready for a voyage of exploration.

 Washing Day

Kauri Creek is mangrove lined with many Islands that are mangrove fringed. These support large eucalypts. We explored the creek that starts second from the Creek mouth on the southern bank.

The wind rose to 15 knots and came around to the Northwest just before midnight. The inflatable started to head butt Maripi so we tied it in close. The rain continued the next day so we set the rain catcher up on the front deck. In about 8 hours we collected about 40 litres which topped our freshwater tank up nicely.

 Rain Catcher

Chris did some maintenance on the port motor which has developed a slight exhaust leak. When we re-provision in Tin Can Bay we will get it looked at. As it was raining Robyn baked a fruit cake. We also tried a beer damper (1 stubbie and 500gm flour, mix together and bake.)  The fruit cake turned out well but alas our beer damper was not so good and maybe the recipe needs to be refined with some added yeast. Reverting to our traditional bread recipe, we produced great results next time and this is all that is left before we could take a photo.

As it was raining, the solar panels were not contributing to our power supply so we started the Honda generator. (thank you Ray for the loan) Its vibrating black rubber feet left some marks on our white deck. The crafty Robyn fashioned four blue suede booties from gardening gloves suede and chux.

Over the weekend there was a strong wind warning with up to 33 knots forecast. The houseboat hire companies told their hire boats to go immediately to Kauri Creek. The invasion started and we ended up with six houseboats at one time.

The forecast was for favourable winds and no rain so on Tuesday 1st May, after 8 days in Kauri Creek we left for Garry’s Anchorage around noon on the rising tide.
