We left Kauri Creek at half rising tide and motored slowly
into Great Sandy Straits. We had a beautiful sail to Garry’s Anchorage with the
swell, tide and wind all going with us. From the Kauri Creek entrance to the first
red was almost square downwind so we put the preventer on the mainsail and
poled the headsail out to starboard. When the headsail would no longer carry,
we gybed it and both sails were on the port side.
Sailing downwind is hard work!
Who is steering the boat?
We arrived at Garry’s around 1600hrs and there were around
10 boats at anchor- 8 yachts. We put Mini
Maripi in the water and rowed ashore. There are great walking trails on
Fraser Island and we were keen to get going. We walked north towards Ungowa for
around 30 minutes and then came back. Chris updated our position on Skipr.net.
It was a beautiful night out with so many stars and the Southern Cross and pointers
were visible for the first time this trip.
Garry's Anchorage - We anchored at 1
On Wednesday we set off to walk to Lake Garry, about 6km
away. We could see the lake but there was not track to it off the fire trail we
were walking on.

The next morning Jeff from Spirit rowed over. He had met the previous owners of Maripi, Ro and Ali along with young Noah
at Cape Capricorn a couple of years ago. Jeff said he knew how to get to Lake
Garry so we set out again to do the walk. The track off the fire trail was
overgrown but with some bush bashing we got through and wet our boots.

A toe in Lake Garry
We shared dinner with Jeff Thursday evening aboard Maripi. The Wide Bay Bar must have been
crossable as, that evening, many large Cats sailed into the anchorage. Rantan and Bellatrix are anchored near us.
Breakfast was leisurely on Friday as the rain has come back
in and we are spending the day indoors.
